The European Gravitational Observatory (EGO) is home to a huge state-of-the-art interferometer known as VIRGO – two 3km long perpendicular arms used to detect and measure gravitational waves with the aim of offering scientists some insight into the origin and evolution of the universe. When the European Gravitational Observatory (EGO) required an upgrade to their network infrastructure, they had to be confident that they could run a series of tests that would not be interrupted for any reason – even in the event of a fire. For this reason they looked to Brand-Rex to provide a solution that would safeguard their data in the most extreme conditions imagine, that solution was Brand-Rex fire survival single-mode cable. The fire survival single-mode cable was perfect for EGO’s requirements as it maintains its structural integrity for 120 minutes in temperatures up to 950°C. This means that, in the event of a fire, EGO has enough time to implement a disaster recovery plan and save all the vital information they have gathered from their experiments.

A Cat6Plus copper system and FibrePlus office backbone had previously been installed in the control room and so the EGO had previous experience of using a cutting edge Brand-Rex network infrastructure solution.
